Effectiveness of Targeted Anesthesia in Reducing Infection Transmission in Dentistry- a Narrative Review

Background: Advances in anesthetic techniques have transformed dental practice by improving patient comfort, procedural precision, and perioperative safety. Targeted anesthesia, including image-guided regional nerve blocks, target-controlled drug delivery, and advanced anesthetic monitoring, has emerged as a promising approach for delivering individualized anesthesia while minimizing systemic adverse effects. Although infection prevention in dentistry primarily depends on strict infection-control measures, targeted anesthesia may indirectly contribute to safer clinical practice by reducing tissue trauma, minimizing unnecessary injections, and facilitating more efficient dental procedures.
Objective: This review aims to summarize current evidence regarding targeted anesthesia in dentistry, compare it with conventional anesthetic techniques, and evaluate its potential implications for patient safety, clinical outcomes, and infection control.
Methods: A narrative review of the published literature was conducted using peer-reviewed articles, clinical guidelines, and review papers addressing targeted anesthesia, conventional dental anesthesia, infection prevention, and perioperative patient safety. Relevant publications were critically analyzed and synthesized to provide an evidence-based overview of current knowledge.
Results: The reviewed literature indicates that targeted anesthesia provides more precise anesthetic delivery, improved pain control, faster postoperative recovery, and fewer systemic adverse effects than conventional techniques in selected clinical settings. While targeted anesthesia does not directly prevent the transmission of infectious diseases, it may indirectly support infection-control practices by reducing repeated injections, shortening procedure duration, and improving procedural efficiency when combined with standard infection-prevention protocols.
Conclusion: Targeted anesthesia represents an important advancement in modern dental practice by enhancing anesthetic precision and patient safety. However, effective prevention of infection transmission continues to depend primarily on rigorous sterilization procedures, standard precautions, environmental hygiene, and adherence to international infection-control guidelines. Further clinical studies are required to determine the impact of targeted anesthesia on procedural outcomes and infection-related complications in dental settings.
